What are the benefits of massage?
Research has shown that massage therapy increases muscle response, diminishes muscle fatigue, and increases muscle energy. The following are other benefits:
*Improves energy and alertness.
*Stimulates the relaxation response within your nervous system.
*Relieves certain repetitive motion injuries related to on the job activities.
*Aids your recovery from sore, pulled muscles or sprained ligaments.
*Increases the elimination of waste and toxins stored in the muscles.
*Massage also helps you be more aware of your body posture, and more conscious about treating your body better.
What can I expect from a massage session?
If it is your first time, you will fill out an intake form. After a brief consultation you will be guided to a safe and comfortable massage room. You will then be asked to undress in private and get drape with a sheet or a towel. You may leave your undergarments on. I want you to know that during your massage you will be completely covered. I will only undrape the part of your body being massaged; making sure that your modesty is respected at all times. I usually start the session working on the posterior part of the body and finish anteriorly. The massage lotion I use is unscented and hypoallergenic. My work is 100% therapeutic and absolutely non-sexual.
Is massage therapy painful?
If it is deep tissue, yes it can be painful. But I would only work as deep as you let me. I usually try to relax the body with Swedish strokes when I am working through the sub-layers of musculature and fascia to keep a balance.
How much clothing do I have to take off?
If you are having a full body deep tissue or Swedish massage, you can only leave your undergarments on. Once you are on the massage table you will be completely draped with a sheet or a towel. If you are having a shiatsu session you won’t have to take off your clothes, you will only have to wear comfortable clothing such as a T-shirt and loose pants and socks.
What are your qualifications?
I graduated from the massage therapy program at the Swedish Institute in New York City. I am licensed by the State of New York, and I am a current member of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA). During the time I was a massage therapy student, I was fortunate enough to work directly with two excellent physical therapists who taught me about strengthening exercises, stretches, and a wide range of different physical conditions that have helped me become more knowledgeable about the human body. I also have a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
